The Humane Society of the Dunes has helped rescue several stray cats in our neighborhood. I have always been impressed with the care and compassion shown toward each and every abandoned/lost animal. The fact that they are willing to help anytime day or night 7 days a week has been a blessing on many occasions. Truly wonderful people. Thank you.

Many years ago, when I moved to the Miller Beach area, we had several incidences of injured wild animals (raccoons, birds, etc.) and Jane at Humane Society of the Dunes was the only one who would help us. She had had past experiences with wild animals and knew what to do. She first took them to Dr. Reed for medical care, then after recuperation, off to be released or to an animal sanctuary. Surrounded by the National Dunes Lakeshore, we continues to get many abandoned dogs and cats, many who had become quite wild and needed specialized knowledge and traps to capture. Jane has worked tirelessly on some of the hardest cases (one dog took 6 months). Not only is she good at rescuing, but once caught they get the most Rolls Royce treatment. After getting a full health assessment (including Spay and Neuter), they go into a foster home situation. It is the lucky dog or cat that gets her services, but these do not come cheap. Jane pays whatever is necessary, often from her own pocket. I urge you to support her. I have seen her rescued animals months later in healthy happy homes. Not as visible as some Humane Societies, (no HS storefront), she works diligently behind the scenes to alleviate animal suffering, and most importantly, she is really effective in doing so.

I can’t say enough about Jane and the work she does for animals in Northwest Indiana. She came to my home about a month ago because I had a family of baby cats, mom and father. She took the countless time to set up traps and catch these beautiful animals. Once she caught them she would take them in have them neutered and spayed and get them into foster homes. None of them ever went to a shelter. She would come over at all times of the day and night as I let her know there was another cat/kitten in the trap on my deck. After one month she ended up catching 13 precious cats/kittens. A lot of them had injuries that needed attention. I truly believe she is amazing at what she does for these four-legged precious animals. Humane Society of the Dunes is doing amazing things. Jane, you are my hero and I am forever honored to be your cat wingman!!

Jane is the most dedicated and tireless advocate for these animals. Kind and compassionate and always ready to help in any circumstance. Our community is fortunate to have her.

In all the years that I have known Jane there has never been a single time that I have called her that I have not received a callback and help with an injured animal or an animal that needed to be trapped and cared for. There have been periods of time when it has taken weeks to capture some of these animals. She never gives up!

The Humane Society of the Dunes and the Director, Jane, are truly on the front lines, fighting for the lost and abandoned animals. Every animal in need, no matter if it is from a tragic hurricane or natural disaster situation or the animal is in the alley or an abandoned house of a dangerous neighborhood, they will do absolutely everything in their power to rescue, heal, save and place that animal. I have seen it first hand. They are truly angels here on earth fighting for the animals that can’t fight for themselves.

Humane Society of the Dunes works endless hours helping rescue animals. This organization works around the clock helping neglected, stray, and abused animals. I have adopted several cats and a dog from them. When I adopted them, they were well taken care of and very healthy. The shelter works really hard getting animals ready to be adopted to homes that fit their needs. This shelter works tireless hours helping animals so they can find their forever homes. I recommend Humane Society of the Dunes. It is truly a place that cares very much for animals and their medical needs.

I have worked with the Humane Society of the Dunes since its beginning many years ago. It has been responsible for the rescue, repair, adoption, and saving of countless pets and wildlife. They receive the best care, even the crabby ones. The pets are adopted to new good homes, and the wildlife released when they are again able to survive on their own. I have counted on the HSD many times to help me with animals in need – even a wild goose chase that led to the rescue of an injured goose. Jane will go out at all hours to rescue stray pets and injured wildlife. Sometimes it is even at risk of her own safety. Injured animals are treated, intact animals are spayed and neutered, frightened animals are worked with to reduce their fears so that they may also be placed in a new home, pets that owners can no longer care for are taken in and cared for. All these animals are treated for their problems, spayed and neutered if needed, vaccinated,, wormed, and given loving are until they can find new homes or be released. We are very lucky to have such a humane organization in our area.

The word “hope” is not usually the first word you think of when seeing a profoundly abused animal or one that has been thrown out, like the trash, a long time ago. But hope is what these animals find at Humane Society of the Dunes. Many folks turn their heads or close their eyes, not able to face the horror of abuse. Jane, the directress of the Society, does anything BUT turn away. Unconditional love and hope are instilled in each animal brought into the care of the Humane Society of the Dunes, no matter how long it takes for them to accept it. I am so grateful that Jane and the Society are there. I cannot fathom a world without them. If the animals could talk, I know they’d say the same.

Jane is an amazing person. She is passionate about rescuing animals and finding them loving homes. We met Jane when we lost our beloved cat Lenny. She said she had the perfect cat for us, and she did: a 5-year-old cat she rescued when the owner went into a nursing home. We named him Max, and he has been a joy to own. Even though he is now 6, Max plays like a kitten and is very affectionate. Thank you, Jane, for a wonderful addition to our family!

I have known Jane for close to 20 years. Jane is dedicated and passionate in her concern for animals. She has helped me many, many times. I remember one time I contacted Jane. I had a mama cat with babies coming to my house. With Jane’s help and a specially designed trap, Jane was able to catch mama cat. It was a very happy ending to get all the babies and mama off the streets and into loving and ‘furever’ homes. When I had to have surgery, my first and only thought for a babysitter for my animals was Jane. I know I could depend on her to feed, water and take care of them. At the time I had rabbits, dogs and cats. I did not have to worry or stress about them during my stay at the hospital. In January, I lost my last surviving dog, Cindy. When I let Jane know she was very sympathetic and understanding. I have always had dogs, so she asked if I would be interested in another dog. I told her yes and what I was looking for. It was a few weeks later that I received a text with a picture of a beagle mix, asking if I would be interested in her. On February 21, 2020, Jane delivered the cutest, sweetest beagle mix to my house. Princess is a very energetic and happy dog. We love her very much. My family is now complete. Thank you, Jane!!!!!! I have known Jane and the Humane Society of the Dunes for 20 years. Over the years, that organization has always been there to rescue strays and abandoned animals. My first pet I adopted from Humane Society of the Dunes was a 4 month old black cat that I named Jellie. She had been abandoned and turned in at the rental office where I worked at the time. She had lost an eye from infection and was in bad shape. Jane came right away and Jellie received the medical treatment she needed and I fell in love with that little cat and asked if I could adopt her. I also had a hound mix named Hilde that was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2014. Heartbroken over her passing and wanting to give a home to another dog, I reached out to the Humane Society of the Dunes and asked if they had a dog that needed a home. Jane came to my home with an American Pit Bull that had been rescued. She is a really sweet dog and her name is Sophie. I am thankful for and believe in the work that Humane Society of the Dunes does!
